Prepared for Brexit

On 29 March 2017, the United Kingdom officially notified the European Council of its intention to withdraw from the European Union. As a staunch defender of the European project, the Government of Spain regrets this decision but understands that the British people have spoken.

This was followed by a period of two years for the European Union and the United Kingdom to negotiate an agreement on an orderly withdrawal and lay the foundations for their future relationship.

The negotiators from both sides reached an agreement on the text of a Withdrawal Agreement, which was ratified by the European Council on 25 November 2018.

However, after the vote against the Withdrawal Agreement by the British Parliament on 29 March 2019, an Extraordinary European Council meeting was held on 10 April 2019, agreeing an extension of Article 50 of the Treaty for European Union (TEU) until 31 October 2019. If the agreement were ratified before this date, the withdrawal would take place on the first day of the following month.

Given that an agreed withdrawal is the best option, the Government of Spain has been working from day one at both European and domestic levels in all areas to ensure the least possible impact from the withdrawal by the United Kingdom.

This website aims to provide the necessary information on this new status quo so that citizens and economic operators can know what Brexit is, how the negotiation process took place and about the changes that the UK's withdrawal from the European Union will mean for their interests, as well as the contingency measures that are being adopted at both national and international levels.
